The postponement occurs in a context of tension, with American warships positioned in the Caribbean for anti-drug operations that have resulted in at least 65 deaths since September.
The Summit of the Americas, which was supposed to take place in the Dominican Republic from December 1 to 6, was postponed to 2026 without a precise date, after an “analysis of the situation in the region”, the Dominican government announced this Monday in a statement.
The Executive clarifies in the note that it obtained the agreement of the United States for this decision.
“After a thorough analysis of the situation in the region, the Dominican government decided to postpone the holding of the Tenth Summit of the Americas until next year,” according to the text, which mentions “the deep divergences that currently hinder productive dialogue in the Americas.”
This announcement comes at a time when Washington has warships deployed in the Caribbean region, officially for an operation to combat drug trafficking. Air strikes by American forces have caused at least 65 deaths since the beginning of September in that area.
