Studying tombs is the first step toward understanding ancient societies. This is what a team of researchers did in China — and an “important theoretical basis” was built.
A team of researchers has mapped the location of ancient tombs across the country. Their analysis showed that both economic conditions and geographic factors likely played key roles in determining where these burial sites were constructed.
The team found that many well-preserved tombs date back to eras of stability and prosperity, including the Qin-Han and Yuan-Ming-Qing dynasties.
In contrast, Periods marked by war and instability, such as the era of the Five Dynasties, left fewer tombs.
Of course, population trends also dictated where tombs were built, noted the authors of the paper published in PLOS One at the end of October.
“This study carried out a systematic digital survey and analysis of the spatio-temporal distribution characteristics and influencing factors of ancient tombs in China, revealing their evolution patterns and influencing factors, thus establishing a important theoretical basis for the construction of a scientific and precise protection system”, says the team, cited by .
Burial sites represent an indispensable source of knowledge about cultural heritage, the research team notes — and now scientists hope this study will help provide some of the scientific foundations needed to preserve these tombs in the future.
