Kazakhstan, fifth country to join the Abraham Accords and normalize its relations with Israel

The authorities of Kazakhstan have confirmed this morning their “intention” to join the agreements, signed in 2020 and which marked the normalization of diplomatic relations between Israel and several countries, all of them Arab.

“By adhering to the Abraham Accords, it aims to contribute to overcoming confrontation, promote dialogue and support International Law based on the United Nations Charter,” the Kazakh Presidency declared via Telegram, where it defended that this decision “does not affect (its) obligations in bilateral relations with any state.”

The announcement occurred during the meeting of the president of the Central Asian country, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, with the tenant of the White House, , in the Oval Office, from where they had a telephone conversation with the Israeli prime minister, . The Kazakh president took the opportunity to praise his American counterpart for his “outstanding results, which many considered unattainable, creating real conditions to establish lasting peace in the Middle East.”

Trump thanked Astana for its decision – which has recognized Israel since 1992 – during a meeting with Tokayev and the leaders of other former Soviet republics in Central Asia: Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. “I am pleased to report that Kazakhstan has given its official consent and that it is now official (…) About 15 minutes ago, an extraordinary country with an extraordinary leader has officially joined the Abraham Accords. And I just want to thank you, president, it is a great honor. It is an extraordinary honor to have you, it is really fantastic,” he declared.

Shortly before, the Republican president has advanced the Astana decision in his Truth Social platform, considering the gesture as “a great step in building bridges around the world” after an “excellent” call with Netanyahu.

Furthermore, he has assured that the signing will take place in a ceremony that Washington will announce “soon” and has highlighted that more states are trying to join “(his) Abraham Accords”, which he has described as a “club of strength.”

Trump has stated that “much remains to be done to unite countries for stability and growth,” although he concluded by boasting of “real progress, real results.”

Why is it important

The Abraham Accords were promoted in Trump’s first term (2017-2021), especially by his son-in-law and advisor, of Jewish origin and a prominent investor in his own family and politics throughout the Middle East. Then, they assumed that the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain, Morocco and Sudan established diplomatic ties with Israel, joining Egypt (1979) and Jordan (1994).

The Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip has unleashed tensions with governments that were recently considered possible incorporations, such as , which has made it conditional on the establishment of a Palestinian state. The Democratic president, Joe Biden, maintained this bet and was close to adding Riyadh, but the delays were forced by Israel, which did not want to give concessions to the Palestinians. and the Hamas attacks, on October 7, 2023, finally stopped everything.

Basically, we are talking about a commercial agreement, but it also multiplies tourist or academic relations. Morocco, for example, has benefited from this framework. Washington now shows that it continues to maneuver, regardless of what happens in Gaza or Lebanon, in favor of its Israeli partner.
