Holders of older e-citizen cards with a chip need not panic. The state has again extended the possibility of using them for electronic signature. In order to be able to use them until the end of 2025, a simple step is enough – to upload a new certificate. How to do it and what do you need to know?

1. The electronic signature remains available even for old documents

If you own an e-citizen issued before June 20, 2021, you can continue to use it for electronic signature. The state extended the validity of the temporary solution and enabled an improved electronic signature for a narrow range of electronic filings, including tax returns through the financial administration portal. It is not necessary to exchange the old license for a new one.

2. How to get a new certificate? It’s simple

The key step is to update the certificate on your e-citizenship card. Just use the app eID clientwhich is available to all users:

  • Open the app and select the “Certificates” option.
  • Click “Issue Certificates” and follow the instructions.
  • The process may take several minutes, so be patient.

If you uploaded the certificate after October 23, 2024, you do not need to take any further steps.

3. Why is this solution important?

Since the beginning of 2023, almost 47,000 certificates have been issued for the recognized method of authorization. This improved electronic signature is a practical solution for thousands of users who do not yet have a new card with a contactless NFC chip.

4. New e-citizens: What are their advantages?

The new cards, which the state issues from December 2022, have modern functions, including an NFC chip. This allows signing documents without the need to use a reader. Using the Autogram application from the Slovensko.Digital association, you can sign documents easily via a web browser.

5. What will the future bring?

In 2023, the state announced changes in the rules of electronic authorization, which were supposed to simplify and expand the possibilities of signing. So far, however, these innovations have not appeared in practice. We will see if the situation will improve in the coming years.

Conclusion:
If you have an old e-citizen card, you do not need to change it – just upload a new certificate. This simple step will allow you to use an electronic signature until the end of 2025. Use the advantages offered by electronicization and save yourself time and nerves when solving the agenda.
