Last week, the deadline given by the National Consumer Secretariat (Senacon), linked to the Ministry of Justice and Public Security, for nine websites to suspend the sale of 48 brands of whey protein suspected of adulteration ended. The measure was adopted after the Brazilian Association of Nutritional Products Companies (Abenutri) presented a study to the government showing that the supplements did not have the amount of protein stated on the labels.

According to experts, adulteration of products can lead to a series of health risks. They range from mild allergies and intestinal discomfort to more serious complications, including the risk of death.

Products are sold in original packaging

Counterfeit versions of whey protein often mix substances such as starch and cornstarch into the concentrated protein powder, compromising the quality of the product. To deceive consumers, original packaging is used to package the adulterated content and the products are sold mainly online or through groups on social networks.

Adulteration can have serious health consequences, especially for people with allergies or pre-existing conditions, such as diabetes. When experiencing any unusual symptoms, the advice is to stop using the product immediately.

To avoid fraud, experts advise users to look for trusted brands and stores when purchasing supplements. Another tip is to access the manufacturer’s website to compare packaging and check details such as seals, batch numbers and security seals, ensuring the authenticity of the product.
