Growing tomatoes in winter may seem like an unusual idea, but if you have space to place a pot, it is worth a try – thanks to this we will have access to fresh fruit. It is also a great option to improve your gardening skills.
Not all tomatoes can be grown at home. Cherry tomatoes and self-pollinating varieties will grow in a pot on the windowsill. These fruits are small in size and resistant to various diseases, so they have a chance to grow and bear fruit even in home conditions.

After choosing the place and type of tomatoes, you should start growing them. How to go about it? Remember these steps:
- Sowing seeds — selected seeds should be placed in small containers filled with soil. A mixture of garden soil with compost and sand will work. The sown seeds should be lightly covered with soil and regularly sprinkled with water.
- Exaggeration — after the tomatoes sprout, they should be transplanted into larger pots.
- Light — pots should have access to light. They should be placed on the south side. LED lighting will also be useful – especially if the days are cloudy. In the case of several pots, one slightly larger lamp is often enough.
- Crop care — tomatoes should be placed in a room where the windows will not be opened and they cannot be exposed to drafts. These fruits do well at temperatures of 19-22 degrees Celsius. Regular fertilization of seedlings is also a good option.
After the flowers appear, to increase yields, you can gently shake the plant or use a brush to transfer pollen.. It is also worth remembering to rotate the plant periodically to ensure even illumination.

Light is an essential element of plant development. In winter, we need to provide it with artificial sources – especially on cloudy days. LED lamps dedicated to growing plants will work for this purpose. Depending on the number of seedlings, the number of lamps should be selected so that: provide tomatoes with even access to light. Lamps should be placed 20 to 40 cm from the leaves. In the case of very tall seedlings, you can use inter-row lighting.
Tomatoes need 12 to 16 hours of light to develop well. After taking into account the number of sunny hours on a given day, artificial lighting should be turned on. In winter, the day lasts on average 8-9 hours, but it is often cloudy and no light reaches the plant.
