The importance of technical rigor and the possible paths for the professional were the central themes of the event promoted by Sheet and by Faap (Fundação Armando Alvares Penteado), this Friday (28), at the foundation’s convention center, in São Paulo.

The Folha Faap Meeting – Journalism Changes the World brought together journalists at the beginning of their careers and experienced professionals, including Edilamar Galvão, coordinator of the foundation’s journalism course, and editorial director of the newspaper.

Regarding the unbridled dissemination of information, Dávila stated that professional journalism can not only change the world but also save lives.

He recalled the need to publicize cases and deaths due to Covid-19. The initiative was motivated by the lack of official information in the administration of Jair Bolsonaro (PL).

“The country entered a data blackout at a time when knowing it was a matter of life and death, because it would guide the policies to be followed,” said Dávila.

For , columnist for Sheetjournalism can indeed be decisive for people’s lives, as long as the professionals’ objective is not to influence readers.

“I don’t have to convince [o leitor] that an ambush does not solve the security problem. The newspaper needs to show with data that this doesn’t work,” he said.

The ability of journalism to mobilize public opinion was the subject of one of Paes Manso’s speeches, who cited as an example the, in real time, a murder carried out by military police officers in a cemetery in Ferraz de Vasconcelos.

The PMs were acquitted by the jury, but the repercussion of the news meant that investigations into deaths caused by the police were directed to the DHPP (State Department of Homicide and Personal Protection), no longer to the police districts.

When talking about major scoops, Basília highlighted good relationships with sources, who, according to her, can also provide exclusive information to . He added, however, that it is important to always maintain a critical sense so as not to get carried away by the intentions of your contacts.

Mediated by , special reporter for Sheetthe second panel discussed different formats for conveying information.

Videos with quick edits and language adapted to social media, for example, help reach young people accustomed to digital dynamics, according to a reporter and journalism student at Faap. The format, however, cannot abandon the investigation.

Didacticism is also an important tool for translating complex topics to the public. This is the daily challenge of the reporter who receives guests on the , program, to talk about hot topics in the news.

“I need to study completely different topics and change the key every day. Yesterday I was talking about electric cars, today I’m going to talk about beauty contests.”

Also present in the second panel, reporter from Mundo da Sheetspoke about the impact of using large databases on war coverage, mentioning an article that .

At the third table of the meeting, Renata Lo Prete, anchor of Jornal da, on TV Globo, was interviewed by Edilamar Galvão, from Faap, and by the special reporter from Sheet Fernanda Mena.

During the conversation, she told details of the coverage of the scheme in 2005, a case revealed during her time at Sheet. “One of the things I say especially well in Sheet It’s just that there was never a discussion about publishing or not.”

What guaranteed credibility to the information in that case, according to her, was understanding the motivation of the then deputy (PTB) in wanting to give the exclusive interview. Jefferson was already feeling cornered after the first revelations of the Correios scandal.

“The Mensalão is a scandal native to the press. It was the press that triggered a process that ended up in the parliamentary commissions of inquiry,” he stated.
