VIDEO Faux pas at the introduction of the price comparison: The Ministry says that its launch was foiled by a cyberattack

  • The Ministry of Finance of the Slovak Republic launched the food price comparison tool cenyslovensko.sk.
  • The comparator allows citizens to compare food prices in chains online.

The Ministry of Finance (MF) of the Slovak Republic is launching a sharp operation of the food price comparison tool also with new functionalities. The Slovak Minister of Finance informed about this at a press conference on Friday Ladislav Kamenicky (Direction-SD). According to the minister, citizens can use the comparison tool to compare prices and actually save money, the savings are in the tens of percent.

“I think it’s a very useful tool for people. If there’s enough traffic after this sharp operation starts, so if people come here and the chains see that people are coming here and that they’re buying right where they (the chains) have it at the best price conditions, then that will put pressure on the price chains to reduce food prices.” explained the Minister of Finance.

According to Kamenický, there are no imaginary prices in the browser. “These are the prices that are updated every morning. I think between five and six o’clock. They are the daily prices that flow directly from the chains, they are mandatory, they are supplied to us by law. So these are not some prices that somebody made up.” he underlined.

According to the press department of the Ministry of Finance, the launch of the sharp operation of the food price comparison tool cenyslovensko.sk with new functionalities was foiled by a targeted and coordinated cyber attack from abroad and from Slovakia. “This was tentatively identified by experts from the Ministry of Finance of the Slovak Republic and the DataCentre. Shortly after the official announcement of the start of live operation of the site, its functions and views remained unavailable. Together with the DataCentre, the Ministry of Finance of the Slovak Republic is currently analyzing and evaluating the situation in detail,” added the press department of the Ministry of Finance.

The Department of Finance announced at the beginning of July that it will launch the pilot phase of the state food price comparator project. It is a portal solution that will serve consumers to compare the prices of basic types of food in selected retail chains. Visitors to the website www.cenyslovensko.sk will be able to compare prices not only between the chains themselves, but also between the specific stores they choose.
