The Vietnamese side confirmed To Lama for another five years. His nomination for the presidency and the continuation of ambitious reforms are expected.
Vietnam’s Communist Party on Tuesday backed a proposal to keep General Secretary To Lam in the top job for another five years. This was reported by the AFP agency, writes TASR.
- To Lam will be the general secretary of the Vietnamese Communist Party.
- The decision was approved by the Communist Party at Tuesday’s meeting.
- The planned party convention will take place in January 2026.
- It was Lam who initiated economic and administrative reforms in Vietnam.
- Leadership decisions will be announced at the 2026 party convention.
AFP cited two sources familiar with the negotiations in which senior Communist Party officials agreed on a list of candidates for leadership positions. It will be published at the party convention in January 2026.
Party stability
“No change. The party chief remains in his post to ensure stability,” one source told AFP, while a second source confirmed that Lam would remain party chief and likely be nominated for the presidency.
To Lam’s reappointment was considered a foregone conclusion, with many officials speculating that he might try to merge his position with that of the presidency, following the example of Xi Jinping in China.
Reform a critic
When To Lam succeeded the late Nguyen Phu Trong in July 2024 – after years of leading the influential Ministry of Public Security – he initiated sweeping administrative and economic reforms that not only had strong support in Vietnam, but also drew sharp criticism, Reuters recalled.
Although the results of To Lam’s efforts are still uncertain, the speed with which he is proceeding emphasizes his decisive style. At the same time, it sends a signal about its determination to continue the ambitious program not only to internal rivals, but also to foreign investors.
The upcoming convention
Decisions on leadership will be finalized at the party congress, which will be held from January 19 to 25, when the composition of the central committee and the influential Politburo will be officially announced.
