Electricity bill in January will have a green flag, without extra charges

A National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel) informed this Tuesday (23/12) that the tariff flag applied to electricity bills in the month of January 2026 will be verde. As a result, consumers will not face additional charges on their invoice, unlike in December, when the yellow flag was in effect.

Despite recognizing that the rainy season presents rainfall volumes below the historical average, Aneel highlighted that, in the months of November and December, there was general maintenance of rainfall in a large part of the country. This scenario contributed to the stability of reservoir levels at hydroelectric plants, allowing the adoption of the green flag.

The regulatory agency also projects that, in January, the activation of thermoelectric plants will be lower compared to the previous month. These plants have higher operating costs than sources such as hydroelectric and wind power, which directly impacts the value of energy passed on to the consumer.

How tariff flags work

Created in 2015, the tariff flag system aims to signal to consumers the real cost of generating electricity in the country. When generation is more expensive, the extra value is transferred directly to the electricity bill.

According to Aneel estimates, since the creation of the system, tariff flags have already provided savings of approximately R$ 12.9 billion in avoided interest.

With the green flag, there is no additional charge. As for the yellow flag, the increase is R$ 1.88 for every 100 kWh consumed. In the red flag, level 1 generates extra charges for R$ 4,46while level 2 adds R$ 7,87 about 100 kWh.
