Poland activated on Tuesday morning a large military device to reinforce the security of its airspace after a new wave of Russian air attacks against western Ukraine, a region located a few kilometers from the Polish border. The response included the deployment of fighter jets from both Poland and allied countries, in a coordinated operation under the umbrella of NATO.
According to the Polish Armed Forces, the decision was taken as a preventive measure. given the risk that Russian bombings could have collateral effects beyond Ukrainian territory. In addition to sending fighters, the ground air defense systems were activated and the radar network in charge of monitoring the national airspace was raised to the maximum alert level.
The army’s operational command explained, through a statement posted on the social network. “These are preventive actions aimed at protecting airspace, especially in areas close to areas considered at risk,” the official message stated.
The geographical proximity of the Russian attacks has generated recurring concern in the countries of NATO’s eastern flank since the start of the invasion of Ukraine in 2022. On several previous occasions, Poland had already activated similar protocols after the detection of Russian missiles or drones operating near its border, as well as after incidents in which projectiles accidentally fell on its territory.
Military sources emphasize that These types of deployments are part of the standard procedures of the Atlantic Alliance when military escalations occur near their borders. The main objective is to react quickly to any possible violation of allied airspace and avoid miscalculations that could lead to a major crisis.
Western Ukraine, although further from the battle lines in the east and south of the country, has become a strategic objective for Russia due to its logistical importance. Key infrastructure, supply routes and centers used to receive Western military aid are concentrated in this area, which explains the increase in attacks in recent weeks.
From Warsaw, the Government insists that the situation is under control and that there is no immediate threat to the civilian population. However, the deployment of allied aircraft also sends a clear political message: NATO remains vigilant and prepared to defend every inch of its territory.
This new episode reflects the extent to which the war in Ukraine continues to have a direct impact on European regional security. As the conflict drags on and attacks near Alliance borders intensify, Countries like Poland continue to play a key role as a containment line between the war and the allied territory.
