In the apartment, the temperature does not drop to minus values and there is no frosty wind. Despite this, winter is also not an easy time for pets. They then encounter many difficulties, so we should not further weaken them by performing treatments that are better to wait until spring. One of them is replanting flowers.
Many people are still not aware that replanting potted plants in winter is not a good idea. First of all, this is because this is the period when most specimens go dormant. Moreover, the winter months are also a time that is not conducive to root regeneration. Therefore, if they are even slightly damaged during transplanting, then they may start to rot or become more susceptible to fungal diseases.
Additionally, it is worth remembering that even though potted plants are indoors and not outside, winter is still quite a challenge for them. Daily conditions change significantly, which is stressful for the plant. Therefore, we should not add stress to it, which could be caused by transplanting flowers.
In addition, changing the substrate could additionally weaken the plant, which already has to struggle with, among others, in winter. with less light, which causes its reserve substances to run out. The heating season and the resulting decrease in air humidity also contribute to the worse condition of plants in winter. Therefore, we should not weaken our flowers even further by transplanting them in the cold months.
A much better idea is to perform this treatment in spring, when the plants wake up from winter lethargy and the prevailing conditions are much more favorable for them. This will allow the flowers to acclimatize better to the new substrate.

Of course, as in most cases, there are exceptions to the rule in this matter. There are situations in which it is permissible and even advisable to replant plants in winter. Here they are:
- Buying young plants– if during this period we buy plants that were grown in special peat production substrates, we must know that they are not suitable for long-term cultivation because they are highly permeable and low in nutrients. Therefore, after purchasing the plant, give it 2-3 weeks to acclimate to the new environment and then transplant it to another substrate.
- Presence of pests and pathogens – replanting plants in winter is sometimes necessary when pests appear in the soil or pathogenic organisms develop in it that could threaten our flowers. Then, thoroughly clean the plant roots under water, remove the infected elements and cover the cutting wounds with activated carbon. Only after completing these activities can we transfer the flower to a new, fresh substrate.
- Overflowing flowers – another situation that makes us repot plants in winter is overwatering them. Thanks to this, we will be able to save our specimens. All we need to do is remove them from the wet soil, clean their root system of rotten elements and transplant the flower into a new one with fresh soil. This way, we will give the plant a better chance of saving itself than if we waited until spring. However, remember that such a procedure does not always end successfully.
