Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in his New Year’s message that a peace deal for Ukraine is “90% ready” following a series of discussions with US and European partners.
However, the remaining 10% “will determine the fate of peace, the fate of Ukraine and Europe,” Zelensky said.
“I want us all to be on the same page now – to understand reality in the same way, to be armed not just on the battlefield but also with the truth. The truth about who really wants what,” he said.
The Ukrainian leader expressed hope that others did, even if they did not fully agree with them.
“That’s why for now we talk about 90%, not 100% readiness for a peace deal,” Zelensky said.
He reiterated that Russia will not end its invasion without increased global pressure and that anyone who thinks so is “deeply mistaken.”
Zelensky also argued that signing a “weak” agreement in the name of peace would only end up prolonging the war.
“Signatures on weak agreements only fuel war. My signature will be on a strong agreement. And that’s exactly what every meeting, every call, every decision is about now,” he concluded.
