Carlo Carreiras: “It is very difficult for the PSD to surpass the PS” in municipal elections

Podcast

The Mayor of Cascais has already told Montenegro that it was a mistake to restrict the possibilities of supporting PSD activists, but nothing is lost. For Carlos Carreiras there is still room to lend a hand to other personalities, including Gouveia and Melo. Listen to Fato Político on podcast here

Carlos Carreiras is in the final stretch of his municipal career. After almost four terms at the head of Cascais City Council, the law prevents him from running for re-election, putting an end to it: “For me, executive politics is municipal politics and in Cascais. Unable to run for reelection, I will not go to another chamber.” But he leaves a descendant who is a plan B: “Piteira Lopes is the alternative plan in the failure of Pinto Luz, but I can say that, of all the candidates for the chamber, he is the one who will present himself best prepared”.

In national politics, the mayor of Cascais takes two divergent positions in relation to the party leader. At the municipal level, unlike Montenegro, he does not believe in the possibility of the PSD winning next year’s municipal elections: “It is very difficult for the PSD to have the largest number of chambers. The elections will go well, the number of chambers will increase, but it will be very difficult to surpass those of the PS”.

Regarding presidential elections, Carlos Carreiras reveals that he has also had the opportunity to tell the prime minister that he does not agree with the strategy adopted at the last congress: “I don’t think it did any good. It was not necessary to define from this distance” that the party would only support a candidate who was a member.

Despite everything, for the mayor of Cascais there is still room for other candidacies to emerge: “I’m waiting for what Gouveia e Melo has to say”, he tells Facto Político at the same time that he assumes that the door is not yet closed and the PSD may even support other personalities from outside the orange ranks.
