Portuguese filmmaker João Canijo died this Thursday, according to CNN and SIC confirmed with Midas Filmes. He was 68 years old.
According to CNN, João Canijo had a “massive heart attack” during the night. The body was found by his maid after lunch, says the newspaper Público, which quotes producer Pedro Borges.

He was the author, among others, of “Sangue do Meu Sangue” (2011), “Living Badly” (2023) e “Evil Living” (2023).
Presented at more than 50 international film festivals, “Blood of My Blood” received the International Critics Award in San Sebastián, Spain, and the Grand Jury Prize in Miami, United States. It has been performed at more than 60 festivals around the world.
“Evil Living” it also won the Best Director Award at the Montevideo Festival and the Grand Prize and the Audience Award at the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Festival, in Spain. At national level, in the 13th edition of Sophia, João Canijo received the award for Best Director and won Best Film.
João Canijo won three Golden Globes for Best Film: the first in 2005, with “Noite Escura”, the second in 2012, with “Sangue do Meu Sangue” and the third in 2014 with “É o Amor”.
