Oranges are an excellent source of vitamin C, which increases resistance to infections. To cover the recommended daily dose of vitamin C, it is enough to consume one large orange per day. The Regional Office of Public Health (RÚVZ) Bratislava informed about this on the social network.
“Even though an orange is full of vitamin C, there are possible risks when consuming this fruit. Negative reactions, such as heartburn or digestive problems (there may be irritation of the stomach lining, as they contain a higher acid content), usually only occur when consuming an excessive amount of this fruit,” experts warned.
Oranges are also one of the richest sources of the trace element selenium, which is also involved in maintaining natural immunity. They also contain vitamin A, B1, B2, B6 and E and minerals, especially potassium, magnesium, phosphorus and manganese.
“By consuming oranges, we can prevent the formation of kidney stones, support our digestion, the absorption of nutrients, especially iron. They also protect our blood vessels, keep them flexible and passable, act as a prevention of cancer and many chronic diseases.” explained Katarína Blažová from the RÚVZ health consultancy.
Thanks to their high potassium content, oranges have dehydrating and lipolytic effects – that is, they break down our fat “pillows”, reduce high blood pressure and cholesterol. The fiber they contain, in turn, supports the health of the digestive tract and intestinal microbiome, thus helping to stimulate intestinal peristalsis and thus prevent constipation. Oranges also help keep the skin fresh, reducing the signs of aging. Their aroma has an effect on mental health, relieves stress, irritability and has an anti-depressant effect.
