In a note to CNN Brazilthese earthquakes are caused by great pressures acting inside the Earth.

When these pressures build up, they cause faults along the Earth’s crust. And the tremor is the result of a sudden slip of one of these fractures.

In just one week, this was the third tremor. The municipalities of Riacho dos Machados and Frutal recorded, last Tuesday (27), seismic shocks of magnitudes 2.4 and 2.9, respectively.

Small earthquakes in Minas Gerais are not uncommon, quite the opposite. It is the state with the highest number of recorded earthquakes.

Bruno Collaço, seismologist at the USP and RSBR Seismology Center

The Brazilian Seismographic Network and the USP Seismology Center stated that earthquakes of this magnitude have little chance of causing more serious damage.

RSBR is responsible for monitoring the seismicity of the national territory through almost 100 seismographic stations.
