Jožo Ráž (71) is one of the most prominent personalities of the Slovak music scene. As the frontman of the legendary group Elán, he made his mark in the history of popular music with his iconic voice, unmistakable expression and energy that appeals to entire generations. The popular singer is now dealing with a loss in his family, writes the weekly.
Ráž’s eldest sister Dagmar Košťálova died on January 21 at the age of 75. The last farewell took place eight days after her death in the crematorium in Bratislava. Although the singer is mostly silent about his family, he was known to have a warm relationship with his siblings. Ráž is the youngest of the siblings and has a sister Gabriela.
During a recent interview, he revealed his privacy and talked about a close-knit family where order always reigned, which the father of the family once enforced with a firm hand. “My photographer was excellent, but strict. He didn’t beat us, but if it came to that, it would be a disaster. When he roared, we were all under the piano in a moment, “fucked” up to the ears. But fifteen minutes later it was thundering. It’s a shame that he died so soon. I wasn’t even twenty years old.” he remembered his late father. He lost his mother in 2012.
His older sister Dagmar, whom loved ones called Daša, was among the top in her profession. During her life she received several academic degrees, she was a literary scholar and Germanist who worked as a docent at the Department of German Studies, Dutch Studies and Scandinavian Studies, Faculty of Philosophy, Comenius University in Bratislava.
