Traveling around the Algarve in February can cost around 50 euros per day, a reality that contrasts sharply with prices in summer. Hotels from 26 euros per night, practically empty beaches and average temperatures around 17 degrees make this month one of the cheapest of the year to visit the south of Portugal, according to data provided by Merca2, a Spanish website specializing in current affairs.
Traditionally associated with mass tourism between June and September, the Algarve enters the low season with sharp drops in prices for accommodation, flights and various activities.
In February 2026, Tavira and Lagos stand out as the municipalities where this decline is most evident, with reductions reaching 40 percent compared to summer, according to the same source.
The numbers confirm the trend. In Tavira, it is possible to find hotels from 26 or 31 euros per night, when in August the prices easily exceed 150 or 200 euros.
In Lagos, the lowest prices are around 40 to 45 euros, still well below the around 180 euros charged in high season, explains the same source based on international booking platforms.
February is not winter in the Algarve
Despite being considered winter on the calendar, February presents relatively mild weather conditions in the Algarve. Daytime temperatures fluctuate between 17 and 18 degrees, with several sunny days and only occasional precipitation.
According to data compiled by Merca2, the region benefits from more than six hours of sunlight per day during this period, which allows for walks along the seafront, meals on terraces and extended visits to historic centers.
The lower tourist influx is another determining factor. It is estimated that the number of visitors in February will be around 70 percent lower than that recorded in summer. Beaches such as Ilha de Tavira or Praia da Dona Ana, in Lagos, are practically deserted, while at the peak of the bathing season they welcome thousands of people per day.
Why are prices dropping so much at this time?
The abrupt drop in demand explains a large part of the price drop. The publication highlights that around 80 percent of foreign tourists who visit the Algarve are concentrated between June and September. In the remaining months, hotels, tour operators and airlines adjust rates to maintain some occupancy rate.
Flights are a clear example. In February, it is possible to find connections between Madrid or Barcelona and Faro for prices starting at 30 to 35 euros return, while in summer the same routes easily cost more than 150 euros. Tourist activities maintain similar prices, but with fewer queues and much smaller groups.
How to spend about 50 euros per day
The daily budget of 50 euros is viable especially in Tavira and Lagos. According to the same source, a typical scenario might include 35 euros for accommodation, 8 to 10 euros for simple meals and products purchased from local markets, around 5 euros for public transport and a small residual amount for one-off expenses.
The Loulé or Olhão markets are still active at this time of year, with fresh fish and regional products at affordable prices. The beaches, coastal trails and historic centers are free to access, allowing you to fill your days without significant additional costs.
Why Tavira and Lagos work better out of season
Unlike destinations like Albufeira or Vilamoura, where many establishments close during the winter, Tavira and Lagos maintain an active local life. Restaurants, cafes, markets and services continue to operate, as the economy does not depend exclusively on seasonal tourism.
Tavira preserves a strong historical and community identity, while Lagos combines heritage, iconic beaches and a year-round tourist offer. According to , this resilience makes these two municipalities particularly attractive for getaways outside of high season.
What to expect without illusions
February in the Algarve requires adjusted expectations. It is not a classic beach destination, but rather one of tours, landscape, gastronomy and tranquility. There will be hotter and cooler days, some establishments close earlier and certain beaches do not have support.
Still, for those looking for rest and controlled prices, the month proves to be an unexpectedly competitive alternative.
