The talks, originally scheduled to take place in Istanbul on Friday, are now expected to take place in , according to sources and Iranian media. The American Foreign Minister, Marco Rubio, for his part, said that the location has not yet been agreed upon and that in order for there to be any substantial discussion on the agenda, Tehran’s missile program must also be included.
Iran only wants to discuss the nuclear program
“The Iranians have requested a meeting in Oman and the Americans have approved the location, but the terms and conditions are still under discussion,” the Arab diplomat, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told AFP. According to another source, a meeting in Istanbul was originally planned to discuss “the nuclear issue, the issue of missiles and armed groups supported by Iran, with the participation of other countries in the region.”
However, “Iran is now seeking to limit the agenda solely to the nuclear issue and wants talks solely with the US,” this source told AFP.
“Indirect negotiations between Iran and the US are scheduled to begin on Friday in Muscat,” the Tasnim news agency reported, adding that discussions “will be limited to the nuclear issue and the lifting of sanctions against Iran.”
Head of the Iranian delegation is Aragchi
Isna news agency reported the same information, stressing that Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi will lead the Iranian delegation, which will also include high-ranking diplomats.
US envoy Steve Witkoff will represent Washington at the talks, Isna added, noting that Jared Kushner, son-in-law of President Donald Trump, may also attend.
Aragchi and Witkoff were involved in five rounds of nuclear talks between Iran and the US in 2025, which were abruptly halted when Israel launched unprecedented airstrikes against Iran, sparking a 12-day war between the two arch-enemies.
