Damage and restoration
The Darnytsia thermal power plant, the most important for Kyiv, was damaged on Tuesday by intense shelling launched by Russian troops on the eve of talks between Ukrainian, Russian and American negotiators in Abu Dhabi.
“Experts have come to the conclusion that the facility is fundamentally damaged and it will take at least two months to restore its systems,” Klitschko said.
“This thermal power plant supplied heat to more than 1,100 high-rise buildings in the Darnytsky and Dniprovsky districts,” he added.
Dystopian images of damage
During a tour of the city on Wednesday, AFP reporters noted the enormous extent of damage to the heating plant, where almost nothing was left intact.
“It was like a scene from a dystopian movie,” said EU Ambassador to Ukraine Katarína Mathernová in this regard.
Recent Russian attacks have repeatedly cut electricity and heating to tens of thousands of households in Ukraine during the coldest winter since the Russian invasion began in 2022.
