Milan/Cortina d’Ampezzo – Thousands of people protested against the Winter Olympics taking place in northern Italy the day after the opening ceremony in Milan. There were clashes between demonstrators and the police when some participants set off fireworks and threw stones at the emergency services. The police dispersed the crowd with water cannons.
