Leading those opposing the court’s agreement on a code of conduct, the minister argued that, “as the magistrate can only give classes and lectures, they began to demonize lectures.”
It will be?
In July 2023, the minister found himself involved in a regrettable situation when he was insulted by Bolsonarists. In the initial version, Moraes came from a lecture at the renowned University of Siena. An ancient institution, its law school would shine a light on the magistrate’s biography, but reporter Eduardo Oinegue showed that it wasn’t quite like that.
The International Law Forum, sponsor of the event, belonged to the company UniAlfa, controller of a law school in Goiânia, all members of the José Alves Group, owner of a laboratory where it produced ivermectin, a cousin of chloroquine.
The forum where Moraes spoke previously met in the Spanish city of Valladolid. Of the 31 speakers listed for the events, 20 were Brazilian and 11 belonged to UniAlfa staff.
Who demonized what? In 2024, a Supreme Court minister received R$44,000 a month. It was good money, accompanied by an enviable infrastructure. That year was the splendor of magistrates’ farofas. Between June 2023 and May 2024, the judges were present in at least 22 international agendas. Almost all of them on the Elizabeth Arden circuit (, , and .)
Those who demonized the lectures were the magistrates involved in demonic trappings. It should be noted that the judges do not have a monopoly on these farofas nor is the anomaly Brazilian. The brilliant Justice Antonin Scalia, of the Supreme Court of the United States, died in 2016 during a party. In 2024, former English Prime Minister Tony Blair —cosmopolitan fanfare— participated in an event in London. The deceased paid for his presence.
It is impossible to create a metric for the value of lectures. Even so, for active state employees and even journalists, it is reasonable to believe that a lecture is worth, at most, a quarter of the blessed person’s monthly salary. After all, he will charge a week’s wages for one or two days of work.
By the way, Fachin’s code of conduct is clear. The more reprehensible conduct there is, the greater the difficulties.
The lectures are the most visible part of the erosion of the Supreme Court, and it is not even possible for the magistrates to report how much they received or from whom.
If so little is so difficult, messing with exuberant relatives would be the task of Hercules. You can root for the code, but you can also follow every step of its funeral or its dilution.
