- Princess Sofia has confirmed brief meetings with Jeffrey Epstein in the past.
- This is her first public statement about contacts with Epstein.
- The family says they have had no contact with Epstein since then.
Princess Sofia of Sweden admitted on Tuesday that she had a brief encounter with the poor American financier and sex offender Jeffrey Epstein years ago. According to the DPA agency, this is the first public statement of the Swedish princess on the news linking her to Epstein, reports TASR.
“I met him in several social situations“, said the princess. According to her, she met Epstein twice – in a restaurant and at a movie screening. “Fortunately, that was all,” she stated. “Now that I’ve read about all the horrible crimes he committed against young women, I’m thankful I’ve had nothing to do with him since the few encounters I had in my twenties.” she said. The princess added that her thoughts are with Epstein’s victims and she hopes for justice.
Media reports indicate that Princess Sofia – at that time Sofia Hellqvist – was introduced to Epstein by Swedish businesswoman Barbro Ehnbomová. The royal family claims that Sofia has had no contact with the financier for the past 20 years.
At the end of January, the US Department of Justice allegedly released the last batch of materials from the files on Epstein. They revealed the ties of various well-known personalities, including political representatives, to a poor American financier who, according to the investigation, built an illegal network in which he provided underage girls to wealthy people. According to the files, the crown princess of Norway Mette-Marit or the brother of the British king and former prince Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor also had connections to Epstein.
