Police chief Maškarová faces criticism: The opposition questions the effectiveness of the corruption investigation

  • The police president claims that they continue to investigate corruption and economic crime.
  • Maškarová defends the effectiveness of the police and the experience of the investigators.
  • After the reorganization of the police, there was a slight decrease in the clarification of cases.
  • The opposition criticizes the insufficient answers to questions about the corruption investigation.

President of the Police Force Jana Maškarová insists that the police investigate corruption and other economic crimes. At Tuesday’s press conference, she presented the police data. According to her, operational search activity became more effective last year. At the same time she denied that such criminal activity would be dealt with by inexperienced investigators.

According to her, the effectiveness of the police is illustrated not only by the amount of criminal information obtained, but also by other indicators. “The goals for us remain unchanged: to reveal, to investigate regardless of the status of persons, with an emphasis really on finances and on the protection of public finances, whether our national or the European Union,” said the police president.

During the press conference, she presented a lot of data that, according to her, supports these claims. It was based on the number of persons accused of corruption crimes and other crimes, but also on the number of such crimes solved.

She admitted that in 2025 the police recorded a slight decrease in the number of cases solved compared to 2023, i.e. the period before the reorganization of the police. She added that the Police Force does not hide this, this one however, it was the reorganization that caused the decline, within which the National Criminal Agency was abolished and the Office for Combating Organized Crime was established.

“Almost all of the implementations carried out by the Office for the Fight against Organized Crime in 2025, except for one, were carried out on the basis of their own operational activity. That is, from their own findings, not from findings from information from investigations, or from citizens, as was the case in the past,” Maškarová also argued.

At the same time, the police chief declared that investigators with an average of 15 years of experience work on corruption cases. She denied that the cases were investigated by young and inexperienced police officers. Prosecutor General Maroš Žilinka presented data last week, which shows that the rate of prosecution of corruption in Slovakia has significantly decreased after the reorganization of the police and changes in the Criminal Code.

According to Karas, she did not answer several questions

The president of the Police Force, Jana Maškarová, did not answer several questions about the investigation of corruption and other economic criminal activity. Viliam Karas, vice-chairman of the opposition KDH, stated this in response to Maškar’s statement on Tuesday. Advised that members of the National Council of the SR for the KDH will ask her about this topic at special meetings of the financial and fire safety parliamentary committees.

“We need to know the answers to the questions of why Slovakia is falling into the perception of corruption, why the president says that they are investigating actions that are obtained from their own activities, why there are no reports from citizens. And that is because they simply do not trust the police to properly investigate and clarify corrupt criminal activity. And we also need to know the answers to the questions of why Slovakia has become an eldorado for VAT fraud and tax evasion.” said Karas.

According to him, Maškarová should also answer questions regarding the abolition of the National Criminal Agency and the establishment of the Office for the Fight against Organized Crime in its place. “She did not give answers as to why experienced and professional investigators, who were able to investigate a specific criminal activity, were transferred to departments where they do not have the competence. We learned that only people who have the necessary experience do it.” criticized Karas.
