Withdrawing money has a daily limit: Multibanco applies it this way (even with a balance in the account)

At the beginning of 2026, many users were again faced with a common block on withdrawals: the daily limit of the ATM network. Although it is not a new rule, it still catches those who are used to making several withdrawals throughout the same day off guard, even if they have a balance available.

In practice, the network applies a daily cap per card. According to information from Banco de Portugal on the operation of ATMs, the maximum daily withdrawal amount is 400 euros per payment card, and each transaction has a maximum limit of 200 euros and a minimum of 10 euros.

This means that, to reach the daily limit, it may be necessary to make more than one operation, but it is not possible to exceed the limit on the Multibanco network with the same card that day.

A limit that has existed for years and is automatic

The daily withdrawal limit is nothing new. The evolution of these rules itself is old: in 2005, Jornal de Negócios reported, based on a statement from SIBS, the setting of a daily limit of 400 euros, with a maximum of 200 euros per withdrawal and a minimum of 10 euros.

More recently, the information is also reflected in the MB WAY FAQ (SIBS brand), which reminds us that withdrawals follow the rules of the MULTIBANCO Network, with a maximum of R$200 per operation and up to R$400 per day.

What may have changed is the perception: anyone who tries to withdraw several times to add amounts above the ceiling ends up encountering a system refusal, regardless of the terminal used within the same network.

Why does this limit exist?

Withdrawal limits are operational rules of the system and act as an automatic brake in case of intensive use of the card, reducing exposure to losses in situations of loss, theft or misuse.

Furthermore, each bank can define its own conditions for specific cards and channels, but within the Multibanco network, the daily ceiling per card remains a practical reference for cash withdrawals from ATMs.

What, after all, is the daily limit at Multibanco

On the Multibanco network, the daily ceiling indicated in the sources consulted is 400 euros per card, with a maximum of 200 euros per withdrawal and a minimum of 10 euros.

The available amount may also be conditioned by the rules of the card itself (for example, the bank’s internal limits or restrictions associated with the type of card), so the safest confirmation remains checking the card’s conditions in the bank’s app or in the associated contract.

What to do if you need to raise more money

When the Multibanco network limit is not sufficient, there are alternatives, depending on the bank and type of card.

One of the options is to use other networks and terminals with different limits. The ATM Express network (SIBS initiative) indicates that national users will be able to withdraw up to R$1,000 per day. Some banks also offer their own terminals in branches with higher ceilings; , for example, cites higher VTM limits and distinguishes between Multibanco/ATM and ATM Express.

Alternatively, it is still possible to withdraw money at the counter, subject to the security and availability rules of each institution, and it is advisable to contact the agency when dealing with large amounts.

Legal obligations remain unchanged

This operational rule on withdrawals does not change the legal framework on cash. For example, the restrictions on cash payments provided for in article 63-E of the General Tax Law remain, which prohibits paying or receiving cash transactions equal to or greater than 3,000 euros (with specific exceptions).

On the side of financial institutions, the duties to prevent money laundering and terrorist financing provided for in Law No. 83/2017 also remain, including the obligation to report suspicious transactions to the competent authorities, regardless of the amount involved.

For those who depend on physical cash on a daily basis, the rule of thumb is simple: in the ATM network, the daily limit per card can be reached quickly and, from then on, only the next day or through other channels with different limits.
