The president of Olhão City Council, Ricardo Calé, the rector of the University of Algarve, Alexandra Teodósio, and the president of the board of directors of S2AQUAcoLAB, Pedro Pousão, visited the future facilities of the Hub Azul de Olhão, in an action to monitor the development of the project.
According to , the meeting made it possible to align the innovation strategy that aims to position the city as a European hub of excellence in marine biotechnology and sustainable aquaculture.
Strategic cooperation between Municipality and University
During the visit, the close collaboration between the Municipality of Olhão and the University of Algarve was highlighted, with a focus on the transfer of scientific knowledge to the business sector.
Ricardo Calé considered that this project represents the culmination of “a vision that unites the fishing tradition of Olhão with the cutting edge of research”, led by the University of Algarve and S2AQUAcoLAB.
In turn, Alexandra Teodósio highlighted that the consortium project, coordinated by the Municipality of Olhão and with UAlg as a partner, will allow “to expand teaching, research and innovation activities across the Algarve continuum”.
Science incubation and talent retention
Pedro Pousão, as leader of S2AQUAcoLAB (Collaborative Laboratory in Sustainable and Intelligent Aquaculture), highlighted the laboratory capabilities planned for the Hub, allowing “the incubation of projects that link science to the production of marine resources”.
Integrated into the National Network of Blue Hubs, the Blue Hub of Olhão represents, according to the municipality, a strategic investment for the retention of qualified talent in the Algarve, with the decisive phases of the infrastructure being planned for the next few months.
