Navalny, who fought against official corruption and organized massive protests against the Kremlin as President Vladimir Putin’s staunchest opponent, died in the Arctic penal colony in February 2024. He was serving a 19-year sentence that he believed was politically motivated.
Navalny’s widow, Yulia Navalnaya, that two independent laboratories concluded that her husband was poisoned shortly before his death. Navalnaya has repeatedly blamed Putin for Navalny’s death, something Russian officials have vehemently denied.
However, this is the first time that European governments have formally confirmed that they believe Navalny was poisoned and that “there is a high probability” that he died as a direct result of the poisoning, specifically pointing the finger at the Russian administration.
