Iran and the US reached a breakthrough in nuclear negotiations in Geneva, they are preparing a draft agreement

Iran and the United States agreed in Geneva on the basic principles of the future nuclear agreement and continue to prepare a concrete draft of the text. Negotiations were mediated by Oman, and President Trump chose to follow developments only indirectly.

Iran and the United States agreed on Tuesday during talks in Geneva on basic principles that could pave the way for a nuclear deal. The head of Iranian diplomacy, Abbas Arakchi, stated this after the second round of talks, which he described as more constructive than the previous one. According to him, the parties will now work on drafts of the text of a possible agreement. TASR informs about it based on the AFP report.

The mediator of the negotiations was Oman, and they mainly focused on the Iranian nuclear program and the lifting of sanctions. The Iranian delegation was led by Arákchi, the American special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. US President Donald Trump announced on Monday that he would participate indirectly in the negotiations.

“We agreed that both parties will continue to work on drafts of the wording of a potential agreement, after which they will exchange drafts and the date of the third round of negotiations will be determined,” Arákčí told state television. According to the head of diplomacy, the negotiators managed to reach a “broad agreement in Geneva on a set of guiding principles on the basis of which we will continue and start working on the text of a potential agreement.” According to him, achieving some progress does not automatically mean that the parties will soon reach an agreement, but that the way to it has been opened.
