The suspect in last year’s murder of former Ukrainian politician Andriy Portnov in the suburbs of Madrid was arrested in Germany, the Spanish police announced on Wednesday. TASR informs about it according to the report of the AFP agency. The former Ukrainian politician was shot in May 2025 in front of a private American school shortly after he brought his children there. Spanish police said without further details that the suspected shooter was arrested in the German town of Heinsberg near the Dutch border.
Portnov was an associate of former pro-Moscow Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, who was ousted by pro-European protests in 2014, known as Euromaidan. In March 2014, Portnov was placed on the list of persons whose accounts were frozen by the EU for violations of the rule of law, corruption and misuse of public funds in Ukraine.
