“It is necessary to act”: inspector general of the Internal Administration concerned about cases of torture among the police

The inspector general of Internal Administration went to the Assembly of the Republic to explain the serious violations of rights involving PSP agents in Lisbon. In particular, the case of enormous violence at the Rato police station.

Judge Pedro Figueiredo, inspector general of Internal Administration, was heard this Wednesday in the parliamentary committee on Constitutional Affairs, at the request of the PS.

Often dubbed as the “police’s police”, the opened three disciplinary proceedings and an investigation into the alleged committed by police officers.

In the Assembly of the Republic, Pedro Figueiredo said he shared “perplexity and horror”especially in relation to the case of .

“I see all these cases with great concern. From here on, it is necessary to act. (…) There are things that need to be rethought in terms of the ongoing training of agents, particularly this attention to training in the field of human rights for agents and guards who are starting their role.”

For now, please note that inspections are being carried out without prior notice to several squadrons and that the actions of formations from the north to the south of the country were reinforced.

“Two training actions have already been carried out in Beja and two in Faro. Two are planned for March in Lisbon – we are investing in Lisbon. (…) I would say that it is very difficult to change mentalities (…), but with these training actions, we ensure that police officers do not act in a discriminatory way.”
