Number of people killed rises to almost 50 after heavy rains in MG

O number of people who died due to the heavy rains that hit Minas Gerais rose again and reached 49 deathsthis Thursday morning (26).

Only in the city of Juiz de Fora (MG)43 deaths have already been confirmed. In Ubá, another municipality in Minas Gerais, another six were recorded.

Furthermore, 18 people are still missing in total across regions. There are 16 in Juiz de Fora and two in Ubá.

Return of the storms

A Minas Gerais’ Zona da Mata region was once again hit by heavy rainssince Tuesday night (25), worsening the situation in Juiz de Fora and neighboring municipalities.

In Juiz de Fora, Juiz de Fora City Hall reported that, despite some points showing temporary improvement, new incidents were recorded throughout the morning.

Civil Defense closed off properties close to a landslide on Waldomiro Eloy Street do Amaral, in the Graminha neighborhood. Residents between the corner of Rua Benício de Souza and the dead-end section of the road were asked to leave their homes immediately. Rua Joaquim Vicente Guedes was also closed for technical assessment.

Other incidents mobilized teams throughout the morning. There was a record of a tree falling on Rua Monsenhor Gustavo Freire, in the Dom Bosco neighborhood, with the road closed and marked. In the Bonfim neighborhood, Civil Defense warned of a broken power cable on Rua Otávio Pereira Torres, close to number 315, posing a risk to pedestrians and drivers.

In the north zone, the rain continued moderately, with the formation of a flooding point on Avenida JK, close to the 4th GAC. In Jardim Natal, buildings collapsed on Rua Doutor Augusto Eckman. Civil Defense ordered the complete evacuation of Dr.

Augusto Eckman and Lieutenant Lucas Drumond advised residents in need of shelter to go to Escola Municipal Henrique José de Souza, at Rua Cidade do Sol, 379, in the Cidade do Sol neighborhood. According to city hall, the city has already received more than four times the expected average for the month of February.

Recommendations to the population

The authorities reinforce that the population must avoid flooded areas and regions at risk of landslides, in addition to following the guidelines of official bodies. To the searches for missing people continuewhile teams work to assist affected families and assess new risk areas.

Still on the morning of this Thursday (26), the start of the third day of searches for the missing and the arrival of the Brazilian Army are expected to help contain the damage caused by the strong storms.
