According to the co-founder of the group, blockades of roads and airports will no longer be their goal.
The German activist group Letzte Generation has announced that it is changing its name and will continue its activities with a new focus. TASR writes about it according to the DPA agency.
Last Generation co-founder and spokeswoman Carla Hinrichs told Spiegel magazine that “something new, something big” will emerge from the group. According to her, there will continue to be protests that emphasize the need for diversity and creativity. “But blockades of cars, airports and roads they are no longer our goal,” she emphasized.
The group’s original name was derived from its members’ belief that they belong to the last generation of people capable of averting a global climate catastrophe. However, this opinion of theirs is said to no longer persist.
In the midst of disaster
“The situation is escalating before our eyes,” said Hinrichsová. Since, according to her, the group is no longer sure whether it is really the last generation, she is abandoning this name. “When we started, the government would still be able to face a climate catastrophe. Today we are in the middle of it,” she added.
According to DPA, the climate initiative Last Generation has become known in Europe for its acts of civil disobedience, such as blocking traffic, abseiling from highway bridges and throwing food at works of art in museums. Its members also, for example, sat down on the street as part of protests and often stuck themselves to the ground with glue.
Hinrichsová claims that now the goal is to expand the initiative. “We want to establish contacts and prepare for upcoming crises. It’s about mutual security, social justice and cohesion,” she added in conclusion.
