OpenAI has reached an agreement with the United States Department of Defense to use its artificial intelligence models in the Armed Forces network.
The announcement was made by CEO Sam Altman on Friday night (27), in a post on the X network.
The move comes hours after President Donald Trump ordered the federal government to immediately stop using rival Anthropic’s technology.

Earlier, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had classified Anthropic as a “supply chain risk to national security,” a label that puts pressure on Pentagon suppliers to abandon their models.
Altman stated that the agreement with the Pentagon respects two “red lines”: a ban on mass domestic surveillance and a requirement for human responsibility in the use of force, including autonomous weapons. According to him, these limits were incorporated into the contract.
Anthropic, which was the first to operate its models on the Defense network, had been trying to secure similar clauses and had negotiations break down.
In a statement, the company said it was “deeply saddened” by the decision and promised to challenge the risk classification in court.
