The current conflict in Middle East It’s a “historic moment fraught with challenges,” a senior US official told CNN. United Arab Emiratesadding that his country and others in the region “failed” to ensure regional stability.
“Our part is to work together with the United States and neighboring countries like Iran to ensure the stability and security of the region. Clearly, this time we have failed,” Anwar Gargash, advisor to the president of the United Arab Emirates, told CNN journalist Becky Anderson.
He said his country and others in the region were working “very hard” to prevent such a war.
In the first statements by a Gulf representative, Gargash stated that the United Arab Emirates, the target of attacks by Iran on Saturday in response to attacks by the US and Israel, does not “fully understand” how this war will develop and called for a return to negotiations.
“We are extremely dismayed and condemn Iran’s expansion of this conflict to include neighboring countries… but I believe that, at the same time, we all understand that the region must be spared a military confrontation of dimensions that we do not fully understand,” he added.
Gargash stated that the UAE was not warned in advance about a military operation, but that it expected it based on the outcome of negotiations between the US and Iran.
Gargash said that while Iran’s nuclear and missile programs pose a threat to regional stability, they need to be addressed through a “political process” and negotiations.
