“Advanced deterrence”: Macron announces that the country is entering a new phase of nuclear armament.
The French President announced today that the France is progressively entering a new phase of nuclear armamentwhich he described as “advanced deterrence”.
“We have to strengthen our nuclear deterrent face the combination of threats and we must think about our deterrence strategy within the European continent, in full respect of our sovereignty, with the progressive implementation of what I will call advanced deterrence”, said Emmanuel Macron during a speech at the Ile Longue base, in Finistere (northwest).
“We are currently living, on a geopolitical level, in a period of disruption full of risks and our compatriots are fully aware of this. This period justifies a hardening our model”, justified Macron referring to nuclear weapons.
I.e, France will have more nuclear warheads. But Macron didn’t say how many there will be – he won’t say, he warned.
Macron justified this decision, stating that “the Europeans have become accustomed to their security depending on rules defined by third parties”.
“Let’s be clear: this was the European security architecture. Agreements dating back to the Cold War, negotiated by others than us, even when they concerned us, and which were denounced by those who signed them without any consultation, even though they were our allies”, criticized Emmanuel Macron, specifically addressing Donald Trump, without mentioning him.
On Sunday, the French President had commented that Iran’s reaction to the US and Israeli attacks are “disproportionate and indiscriminate”, while announcing that France was strengthening its defense in the Middle East.
