The PP takes over the presidency of the Cortes of Aragon without the support of Vox | Spain

First test to measure the degree of understanding of PP and Vox in Aragón after the regional elections. , the Popular Party took over the presidency of the Aragón Cortes Board this Tuesday by a simple majority and without the support of Vox, which voted blank along with Aragón Exist. The vote took place a few minutes ago during the constitution session of the Autonomous Chamber, where the main unknown was precisely who would occupy the commanding chair of Parliament.

The constitution session began this Tuesday at 11:00 in the Aljafería Palace, where the 12th legislature got underway with the oath or promise of its 67 Aragonese deputies. In the regional Chamber, the PP has presented its deputy María Navarro as a candidate for the presidency of the Cortes of Aragón, while Vox has not registered any candidate, but has voted blank. In this way, Navarro has been appointed with 26 PP votes compared to the 25 obtained by the PSOE candidate, Fernando Sabés, who has brought together the ballots of the left-wing parties. There have been another 16 blank ones, from Vox and Aragón Exist.

In 2023, and prior to the coalition agreement during Azcón’s first term, it was Vox who took over the presidency of the Table with the support of the PP. The Popular Party then justified it under the argument of “parliamentary tradition”, since Abascal’s party had been the third most voted party. Almost two months later they agreed on the Executive. On this occasion, the ultras have not presented a candidate after spending days claiming that they are not “looking for seats” to form a Government.

PP and Vox now have until May 3 as the limit to seal a government agreement and not repeat elections. Unlike Extremadura, the good harmony between Azcón and Abascal suggests that there will be understanding, although not at the moment. Well, the obstacle is the elections in Castilla y León on May 15, since Vox is not interested in closing an agreement before the polls open in the neighboring community.

Without PAR or Podemos

The main novelty of the new Cortes of Aragon of the 12th legislature is that, for the first time, there will be no deputy from the Aragonesista Party (PAR) sitting among the 67 deputies of the Aljafería Palace. Podemos won’t be there either after a decade. As leader of the opposition, Pilar Alegría will serve as former spokesperson for the Government in a group that equals the worst result of the socialists in Aragon with 18 deputies.
