Turning compost can be one of the first jobs you tackle in the garden. But it is usually worth waiting with her. “It will be more effective if you already have fresh material in it,” advises Jana Bucharová in the podcast iReceptář do úch. But it is not the only reason for the postponement.

The first sunshine, the first warmer days. And not only gardeners and do-it-yourselfers are attracted to it. What could be done after all? Trim trees, sure. But what then? The grass is short, the ground hasn’t really frozen yet… But Jana Bucharová is clearly putting the brakes on this enthusiasm. “Wait a little longer before turning the compost,” says an expert from the magazine Receptář on garden topics in the podcast.
Pitchfork in hand
Compost turning is a great procedure. Not only will you strengthen your muscles and stretch your whole body, but above all you will speed up the ripening of the nutritious mixture that you have been carefully preparing for the flower beds and the entire garden for so long.
It is also a good idea to turn the compost over after winter. As soon as the frosts really let up, i.e. at the end of March or the beginning of February, it is already possible. “However, there may be a significant danger hidden in it,” warns the expert.
Hidden sleepers
A warm pile of compost not only means, but also a welcome shelter for a whole range of animals. In summer as well as in winter. “For example, a hedgehog, toad or lizard can sleep in it,” explains Jana Bucharová. Especially if it is freely available.
In such a case, he recommends extreme caution and starting work at the end of April. The moment all the sleepers leave the places.
