The Minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) Gilmar Mendes criticized governors who appeal to the Court to obtain preliminary decisions with fiscal effects and then attack it. During the plenary session, the dean pointed out that the country lives with “excessive hypocrisy” in the debate about the Supreme Court’s actions.
As an example, Gilmar cited the head of the Minas Gerais Executive, Romeu Zema (Novo), whose management, according to the minister, has “survived” thanks to the provisional deliberations of the STF.
— It is shocking to see a governor who led the State into an economic debacle survive thanks to injunctions given by this court and then attack the Court — he said.
Gilmar also used a biblical passage to question the behavior:
— I keep thinking, dad, they don’t know what they’re doing — he said, defending greater reflection on the granting of injunctions in federative conflicts.
In February this year, STF minister Nunes Marques suspended for 180 days the processing of an action in which Minas Gerais seeks to equalize the debt with the Union, according to its payment capacity, amid negotiations for the state’s accession to the Program for Full Payment of State Debts (Propag). The agreement between the Union and MG for the state’s adherence to the Tax Recovery Regime was approved in 2024, but the RRF was replaced by Propag in the following year.

Pre-candidate for the Presidency of the Republic, Romeu Zema is known for his constant attacks and questions on the actions of the Supreme Court. This week, for example, when sharing the information that minister Flávio Dino had suspended the breach of confidentiality by businesswoman Roberta Moreira Luchsinger, determined by the CPMI of the INSS, he wrote that “when the investigation approaches, it is always like this, the untouchables shield themselves”.
Afterwards, Zema set his sights on minister Alexandre de Moraes, a long-time target of the right for conducting investigations into the coup plot and the fake news investigation. The governor cited the messages, revealed by GLOBO columnist Malu Gaspar, which point out links between the minister and banker Daniel Vorcaro, arrested this week in the third phase of Operation Compliance Zero.
“The banker had 129 million reasons to hope that his interests would be met by Moraes. What is the Senate waiting for to remove him from office?”, said the right-wing politician, referring to the contract agreed by Vorcaro with Moraes’ wife, lawyer Viviane de Barci, whose millionaire value was also revealed by Malu Gaspar.
