Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed support for an immediate ceasefire in Iran in a phone call with Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkiyan on Friday. This was announced by the Kremlin, reports TASR according to the AFP agency.
“He reiterated Russia’s principled position on the need for an immediate cessation of hostilities,” the Kremlin said, adding that Putin had also requested “return to the path of political and diplomatic solution as soon as possible”.
The head of the Kremlin, according to the state news agency TASS, too expressed his condolences to Pezeshkiyan in connection with the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other victims of American and Israeli attacks on Iran.
Pezeshkiyam thanked the Russian leader for his solidarity with the Iranians in the difficult time of the “struggle for independence” and informed him about the situation in the conflict. The Iranian leader’s office said the presidents discussed “recent developments in the Middle East” in the phone call.
