Fridge magnets are in almost every home. While they seem completely safe, in some situations they can cause unexpected problems.

There are many myths surrounding this topic. The most common thing to say is that magnetic field produced by magnets may interfere with the operation of modern refrigerators, especially those equipped with electronic displays or touch panels. In practice, most classic souvenir magnets have a very weak magnetic field. They cannot damage electronic circuits or affect the operation of the compressor. Manufacturers of household appliances design devices to be resistant to typical home external factors.

However, it is worth being careful in the case of very strong neodymium magnets. Those used, for example, in workshops or industry, may actually affect some electronic components.

Much more a real threat than the magnetic field is… weight. If your refrigerator door is literally plastered with heavy magnets, especially in one place, this can cause:

  • additional load on the hinges,
  • minimal door deformation,
  • weakening of the seal pressure.

As a result the refrigerator may not close properly perfectly tight. This, in turn, means cool air escapes and more energy is consumed. The compressor works harder, electricity bills increase and the equipment wears out faster. This is a possible scenario, although it only applies to situations where there are a lot of magnets and they are heavy.
