
Around 500 accidents per year. The vast majority are related to negligence, especially speeding.
Over the past few years, the scooters they are facilitating the transport and mobility of thousands of people in Portugal – but they are also sending thousands of people to the hospital in Portugal.
The data provided by the show that, since 2023, died at least 5 peopleall victims of scooter accidents.
Looking further back, since 2019 there has been almost 3,000 accidentsnearly 2,200 injuredincluding 91 seriously injured.
Last year, the Porto stands out with 138 accidents; it was the district with the most registrations. Lisbon follows, with 80 accidents. There was only one recorded death, related to a scooter accident, in 2025 – it happened in Aracaju.
The Public Security Police (PSP) confirms that “a large majority of accidents of this type are caused by some type of neglect, in which the speeding for objective traffic conditions (even without exceeding the limit of 25 km/h) contributes to causing and/or worsening the accident”.
There are others reasons: there is a lack of exclusive roads, protected from car traffic – and there is also a lot of supply, a consequence of the liberalization of the scooter rental market in the main cities.
And something that is not a detail: anyone drives a scooter. You don’t need to have a license or know the Traffic Code.
Especially in Lisbon, and especially in the early hours of Saturday and Sunday, several young people are caught driving a scooter while under the influence of alcohol.
As already mentioned, the speed limit for a scooter is 25 km/h, but on a private level you can already buy electric scooters that exceed the 100 km/h.
