How to care for currants in spring?
Currant, next to blueberry, is the most popular fruit bush in Poland. It can be found practically everywhere. It copes perfectly with our climate and has few requirements. Currant fruits are valued for their taste and health-promoting properties. Currant contains large amounts of vitamin C, which improves immunity, has anti-aging properties and supports collagen production. Additionally, currant berries contain antioxidants, have anti-inflammatory properties and lower cholesterol levels.
As with all fruit bushes, early spring is a key time to take care of later harvests. Regardless of whether you have red or black currants in your garden, or even less known varieties such as white ones, you need to perform basic care treatments. In spring, they focus primarily on strengthening the bush. In the case of currants, shoots are cut and fertilized in early spring. These are two key treatments for proper flowering and fruiting.
Currants grow best in permeable and humus-rich soil. They are planted in spring or autumn, and the most important element of daily care is watering. Currants need constantly moist soil. Gardeners recommend spreading a layer of mulch around the roots to prevent water loss.
In March, water your currants with this. Fertilizer that increases fruiting
sets virtually the entire growing season. At this time of year, rich, multi-component fertilizers should be used. They strengthen the root-stem system and stimulate growth and flowering. In the case of currants, fertilization with granulated manure is often recommended. It acts as a double dose of nutrient and intensifies yields in the future. It provides the necessary nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus, and also enriches the soil with humus. Using granulated manure for fertilizing currants is very simple. Just mix 1 manure with 10 liters of water and set aside for a few days. When the solution is thick and cloudy, you can water the currant bushes with it.
Another way to fertilize in spring is with yeast. They support plant growth processes and protect against attacks by pests and fungal diseases. Dissolve 100 grams of fresh yeast in a bucket, add half a glass of sugar and 10 liters of water. Mix everything, cover with gauze and set aside for at least 1 day. After this time, the fertilizer is ready for use.
How to prune currants in spring?
Spring pruning of currants is a key procedure that affects the abundance of crops and the health of the bush. They are usually carried out in March, before the buds begin to develop intensively.
- Blackcurrant: Cutting blackcurrant mainly involves removing the oldest, 4-5-year-old shoots that bear little fruit. We leave about 10-12 of the strongest shoots – both young, one-year-old, as well as two- and three-year-old shoots. Shoots growing towards the center of the bush or crossing each other should also be removed to ensure better ventilation and light access.
- Red and white currants: For red and white currants, the cutting is slightly different. These varieties bear fruit best on two- and three-year-old shoots. First of all, we remove the oldest shoots (over 5-6 years old), damaged, diseased and those that thicken the bush. We also shorten the side shoots to 2-3 buds, which stimulates the bush to produce fruit-bearing shoots. Ultimately, the bush should have 8-10 strong main shoots.
