Miranda Sarmento rejects amending budget, but admits impact of storms and war in the Middle East

Minister of Finance admits that the impacts of the storms and the conflict could lead to the possibility of a rectifying OE2026 being “reconsidered”.

This Tuesday, the Minister of Finance ruled out the possibility of an amending State Budget for 2026 (OE2026), although admitting the “significant budgetary impact” of the storms and the which may lead to “rethinking this issue”.

“We do not see, at the moment, a need for an amending budget, [mas] This does not mean that, later on, if circumstances so require, this issue will not have to be reconsidered”, declared Joaquim Miranda Sarmento.

Speaking to Portuguese journalists in Brussels after the meeting of European Union Finance Ministers (Ecofin), the minister stressed that the Government remains “committed to maintaining the balance of public accounts and continuing to reduce public debt”, despite the “significant budgetary impact” of phenomena such as the storms in the country at the beginning of the year and the conflict initiated by Israel and the United States and the consequent Iranian response.
