The new President of the Republic wanted to visit Mourísia, the village where, in August last year, residents were overcome by fear of the flames for several hours.
The village of Mourísia, visited this morning by the President of the Republic, António José Seguro, narrowly escaped the flames in August last year. The fires in the municipality of Arganil were the ones that destroyed the largest area in Portugal since records were recorded, with more than 65 thousand hectares burned.
On the day August 14the morning began with a landscape of smoke, after a sleepless night with the fear of approaching flames.
O fire traveled approximately 12 kilometers from the outskirts of Piodão, to the bottom of Serra do Açor.
Mourísia has 10 permanent inhabitants. At the time of the fire, with the flames at the gates of the village, six people with less mobility were removed as a precaution, with those who could help remaining.
With the memory of 2017 very present, the Fear dominated the village for several hoursbut at lunch time the scare was greater.
The fire ended up spreading and leaving marks in the neighboring municipalities of Oliveira do Hospital and Seia. It burned more than 65,000 hectares, the largest burned area ever in the country.
