First and last opportunity: Portugal's oldest palace will open to the public for one night and entry costs €2

The National Palace of Sintra will host an exceptional night opening on March 21st, allowing the public to visit the monument outside of normal hours and participate in an initiative linked to the region’s environmental recovery. According to the portal, the proposal is part of a special event that combines heritage, culture and a symbolic gesture aimed at the regeneration of Serra de Sintra.

The visit takes place between 7 pm and 11 pm, and the last entry is scheduled for 10 pm. According to the same source, access to the space will not be via a conventional ticket, but rather by purchasing a tree, worth two euros, which will later be used in reforestation actions.

A different night in a historic monument

The initiative is called “A Night for the Future of Serra de Sintra” and aims to provide a different experience for visitors. The publication writes that the objective is to open the palace in a special environment, allowing you to explore the monument in a different way than usual.

In addition to the cultural and tourist dimension, the event aims to involve visitors in an environmental recovery action. According to the same source, each person who participates will be contributing to a regeneration project in the Sintra Cascais Natural Park.

Ticket is a tree

Access to the palace on this night works symbolically. Instead of a traditional ticket, visitors will have to purchase a tree, worth two euros, made available by local producers.

According to the same source, these copies will be delivered to Terreiro do Palácio and temporarily placed on the steps of the National Palace of Sintra. The objective is to create a visual element that represents the collective commitment to the recovery of the mountain’s natural landscape.

Trees will be replanted in the mountains

After the event, the trees purchased by visitors will have a specific destination. The specimens will later be replanted by the organization in Serra de Sintra, contributing to the recovery of the territory. The initiative thus seeks to transform a symbolic gesture into a concrete action of environmental regeneration. According to the same source, the idea is to associate visiting the monument with a direct contribution to the future of the surrounding natural landscape.

During the night, the tour through the palace will be accompanied by an environment designed to highlight the historic character of the monument. The publication writes that the space will have special lighting inspired by candlelight. This environment aims to reinforce the intimate dimension of the visit. The route will also include musical notes along the way, creating an integrated cultural experience.

Collective gesture for Serra de Sintra

For the entity responsible for managing the space, the initiative seeks to involve the public in an action of shared responsibility. João Sousa Rego, president of the board of directors of Parques de Sintra, explained the meaning of the proposal.

“When entering the palace, each person will also be taking part in an effort to renew the landscape, through a small gesture on an individual scale, but very significant in the dimension it gains when shared”, said the person in charge, quoted by the same source.

The Sintra National Palace is considered the oldest palace in Portugal and has more than a thousand years of history. According to NiT, the monument continues to be one of the most emblematic historical buildings in the town of Sintra.

The night opening scheduled for March aims to offer a new way of getting in touch with this heritage. According to the same source, the initiative seeks to combine the valorization of the monument with a concrete action linked to the preservation of Serra de Sintra.
