A new elite division of the Rio de Janeiro Municipal Guard began operating this Sunday (15). The agents who make up the so-called Municipal Force will act in overt policing using weapons.
The action began after the departure of personnel from the Coastal Base, located in Leblon, in the South Zone.
“It is the beginning of a new phase in the role of city hall,” Mayor Eduardo Paes published on social media this Sunday. “A signal to the population of Rio de Janeiro that it is possible to confront crime. Let’s transform the reality of this State.”
On this first day of policing, The agents will operate in two perimeters with a high incidence of robberies and theft crimes: the area that covers the Rio Bus Station, the Gentileza Terminal and the Leopoldina Station, in the Center; and the Jardim de Alah region and surrounding areas, in the South Zone.
Another 20 perimeters, distributed throughout all regions of the municipality, were defined for policing the teams, and implementation in these areas will be done in a phased manner.
Details of the new security force
The uniform features city hall logos, giving a preview of the look FSA agents will have on the city’s streets.
The new group initially has 600 vacancies exclusively for municipal guards already in activity.
They received specific training in the use of weapons.
In addition to the operational base in Leblon, the Municipal Force has two others in the city: Base Oeste, in Inhoaíba, in Parque Oeste; and Base Norte, in Piedade, in Parque Piedade. Each of them has approximately 500 square meters of built area.
The agents have a diverse operational structure, including vehicles, pick-ups, motorcycles and vans, in addition to patrolling on foot, always in pairs or trios, depending on the needs of each area. For safety and effective action, they are equipped with Glock pistols and instruments with less offensive potential, such as chemical agent sprayers, tonfas and tasers, in addition to mandatory body cameras and mobile operational management and monitoring devices.
