- Fuel prices in Slovakia should remain comparable to the V4 countries.
- In Slovakia, fuel is supposed to be significantly cheaper than in neighboring Austria.
- Slovnaft registers massive purchases of diesel in the northern districts near the Polish border.
- The government is considering a regulation introducing higher diesel prices for foreign drivers.
In the coming weeks, fuel prices in Slovakia should be approximately at the level of the Vyšehrad Four countries (V4) and significantly cheaper than in Austria. He said this after the government’s meeting with Slovnaft company representatives on Tuesday Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD).
“We want to be at a level that is comparable within the V4 and, as far as Austria is concerned, to be cheaper,” said the prime minister, adding that this situation is currently a reality.
According to him, however, lower fuel prices are also starting to bring problems. “Today, representatives of Slovnaft alerted us to the situation that arose in some northern districts of Slovakia, where due to the fact that diesel in Slovakia is significantly cheaper than in Poland, huge purchases were made, not only for the tanks,” added Fico.
According to the Prime Minister, the government has agreed with Slovnaft that any restrictions on the amount of fuel during refueling will remain at the discretion of the sellers, but it is considering the adoption of a government regulation that would bring higher diesel prices for foreign drivers. “If a foreigner comes, he will have to buy diesel at a price that may be in his country, it will simply be a completely different price. We can do it. The relevant legislation allows us to do it, now the legislation is analyzing whether we will accept such a government regulation.” added the prime minister.
