The King's gesture is not equivalent to an apology: “It is a very measured message” | Today in EL PAÍS: your daily podcast

Felipe VI has taken a step that seemed difficult a few years ago: publicly admitting that Spain committed “a lot of abuse” in the conquest of America. It is a gesture, but it is not a request for forgiveness, which is what Mexico has been demanding for years.

The Mexican president, Claudia Sheinbaum, appreciated the “gesture of rapprochement” of the king of Spain and contrasted the monarch’s attitude with that of “several years ago,” “where the letter sent by President López Obrador” requesting an apology for historical grievances was not even recognized. That rejection, he admitted, caused the “cooling of relations,” which are now beginning to improve.

Ana Fuentes analyzes the consequences of this exchange of statements from the Spanish perspective with EL PAÍS journalist Miguel González, specialized in diplomacy and Casa Real, and from the Mexican perspective with her colleague Luis Pablo Beauregard, editor-in-chief of EL PAÍS México.
