Federal deputy Alex Manente (SP), from Cidadania, accuses an internal rival wing of wanting to end the party.
The party is split, with two groups fighting over its command since Roberto Freire was removed from the presidency, which he held for four decades, in September 2023.
Manente is from Freire’s group, and in the city of São Bernardo do Campo (SP).
Two days later, however, the other group held its own event and confirmed support for the president who replaced Freire.
Both sides accuse each other of irregularities in the process of holding their meetings, criticizing points such as insufficient quorum and disrespect for call rules.
This Wednesday (18), a decision by the Court of Justice of the Federal District responded to a request from Bittencourt’s group and annulled the meeting of the national directory that convened the congress that elected Manente, therefore suspending the party leadership. The Manente wing asked the court for reconsideration.
For the deputy, the decision is a legal anomaly, which could have the effect of ending the party. “The party could end, maybe that’s what communists without votes want”, says Manente.
The reference is to the fact that Cidadania is the successor of the former PCB (Brazilian Communist Party).
“When I see some of their statements, I am impressed by their ability to invent lies. But we are confident in the court’s decision,” he says.
Behind the divergence between the wings, there is a political issue. Freire and Manente’s group has a line of opposition to the Lula government.
The opposing wing advocates rapprochement with the president and wants to form a federation with the PSB.
According to Manente, the federation with the tucanos cannot be undone before its expiration date, on May 26th. By that date, the party membership deadline will have passed.
“This situation is already harming the party, which could be receiving members. But who will have the courage to join a party the way it is?”, he asks.
